A One-Day Short Course by Dr. Bengt H. Fellenius

Basics of Pile Foundations

Coast Coal Harbour Hotel: 1180 West Hastings Street
Friday, May 12, 2023

The VGS will be hosting a one-day short course on Friday, May 12, 2023 on the Basics of Pile Foundations by Dr. Bengt H. Fellenius. The registration fee is $350 until April 21 after which it will be $450. The student registration fee is $200. A certificate will be provided to those attending the course for 6 PDH.

The short course is expected to run from 0830 to 1700. Lunch will be provided as well as snack and drinks during the morning and afternoon breaks. Questions can be directed to mbosse@thurber.ca.

Course Overview

The course comprises three parts presenting the essentials of deep foundations design for capacity, drag force, settlement, and downdrag for single piles, and pile groups (narrow and wide piled foundations). The emphasis will be placed on analysis and design for settlement.

The Three Parts

  1. Analysis of Load Transfer, Capacity, and Response to Load.

  2. The Static Loading Test: Performance, Analysis, and Instrumentation. Head-down test and Bidirectional test.

  3. Piles and Pile Groups—Long-Term Response and how we know what we know.

The presentation is illustrated with case histories of testing and design analysis and addresses evaluation of strain-gage measurements from instrumented pile loading tests and how to assess residual force for conventional head-down and bidirectional static loading tests, as well as principles of analysis and how to calculate settlement of piles and piled foundations—single piles as well as pile groups along with pertinent aspects of construction procedures, load and resistance factor design.

Presenter

Dr. Fellenius, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa from 1979 through 2002, is an internationally recognized authority in the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, and, in particular, deep foundations. He has gained a wealth of practical experience during more than 60 years of work at home and overseas through a variety of assignments, some of which he has written up in 400+ technical journal and conference papers, articles, books, and book chapters.
